1935 "LOST" PRODUCTION STILL VINTAGE RARITY ON CHAPLIN'S MASTERPIECE! Up for sale is an extraordinarily rare 1935 original production still on a deleted/cut scene from Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece Modern Times. In fact, this little gem is as rare as any of the original movie posters and a lot rarer than any original lobby card released on the film. This amazing original was found in an archive in Europe. If you're into vintage film memorabilia and movie fandom, you've surely heard of Modern Times.

" It's the last outing for Chaplin's signature "Little Tramp character made globally famous in the 1910's. In fact, when I originally first saw this rare image, I believed it to be from a short film that Chaplin released in the teens.

No question, this scene depicts quintessential Chaplin imagery. It's what you'd call, Chaplinesque.

All of the elements are right on point, including the stout character actor who's playing the thief. I think that's one of the primary reasons I thought this photograph was from one of Chaplin's two-reeler classics - That guy looks familiar.

I think Chaplin used him early on in his career. Nevertheless, I love the stereotypical criminal's outfit they've got him in. From the cap, right down to the cloth sack he's using to load up all of the silver goodies, it's fundamentally good fun. Every detail adds a little more life to the layering within this well orchestrated world of Charlie Chaplin's design. Even the black skid-marks scraped haphazardly on the floor - left there by the big man's shoes - enriches the color and flavor of this scene, not to mention the vintage "SILVERWARE" sign hanging so loudly above it all.

That could have easily been found two decades earlier back in the 1910's. However, what makes this original photograph so exciting - besides the amazingly charming image - is the fact that this production still depicts one of the lost/deleted scenes from one of Chaplin's best known works, Modern Times. While doing research on dating this piece, I found out that this image was shot in 1935 while filming the feature in Hollywood. It would be his last silent film. I also found out that the scene was ultimately cut from the film and no longer exists today in motion picture form.

All that remains are a few production stills [not publicity stills], this being one of the only originals in private hands! That certainly makes this a rare and special piece.

Additionally, I found information on WHY the scene ultimately didn't make it into the film. Below is an excerpt from the Turner Classic Movies website. Another scene Chaplin apparently shot (judging from existing stills) but scrapped was one in which the department store burglars clean out the silver department. Chaplin decided that would make them no more than common thieves, when his intention was to show them turning to crime purely out of economic desperation. This single-weight glossy production still measures 9 and 5/8th by 7 and 5/8ths inches and is in Fantastic Condition. It was handled, but still remains very nice after all these decades of storage.

I've posted a direct high-res scan of photo here so you can clearly see it. It's a SUPER SHARP image, which was printed directly off the original camera negative.

If you're looking for a super piece of Hollywood history - You just found it! It can crash regardless of any decision you make and can even crash regardless of any decision made by the company related to the stock - Leaving you with a near worthless piece of paper that won't inspire anyone! The magnificence of art and historic documents have an inherent value that relates to civilization and society. Please write with any questions.
