It's Friday, the town is closed down for the most part, but I still want to stay active so here we go! RICHARD GARROD 1990 STILL LIFE 11"X14" PHOTOGRAPH. In 1990 a fire destroyed my camera shop. Huntington Witherill gave me the idea of doing a portfolio and we published the "Firesite" portfolio soon after.
Richard Garrod (1924-) was one of eight photographers that participated in the portfolio. Of the seven photographers Richard was the only one that didn't go to the site and photograph. He knew how if affected my life at the time and said to me that he'just couldn't photograph there'. He agreed to do a still life of items from the fire. The old pocket watch was my grandfathers, the rice bag was my Dad's old shopping bag that he added leather handles to, the camera I don't remember it other than a used camera that I had for sale, and the electrical strip came out of our photo lab. Richard Garrod who lived in Monterey, California for over 50 years was one of the Monterey area's most prolific and dedicated photographers.
His beautiful black and white images are an essential part of Monterey's historic photographic legacy, and his life is intertwined with many of the area's most notable artists. Garrod has been a cohort and traveling companion to Brett Weston, a close friend to Wynn and Edna Bullock, and a dedicated student of Minor White and Ansel Adams. He has inspired thousands of students who have committed themselves to the photographic process, teaching not only the techniques of photography, but methods for accessing their creativity as well. Please note, portfolio box shown is not included, cover sheet with essay and list of photographers is included.
